Can you be a musician... without knowing how to read music?

You can be a "song writer" or a "player" or an "entertainer" without reading much music. But if you can't read music you can't really call yourself a "musician." As an analogy many people can speak a little Spanish but to be truly fluent you have to be able to read and write in a foreign language.
