Should a girl always start the conversation?

I met this boy on Facebook we are kinda friends, we have only talked like three times, but each time we talked it was for hours. The first time he started the conversation on chat, the second time I started it, and the third time we wrote on my wall to chat him, and then I said "Hi" on the little chat thingy. I dont want to go up to him everytime he is online because that will seem alittle stalkerish, which is totally not me, but I enjoy talking to him we have alot in common and we make each other laugh. Small Note: He is 16 and I am 14
