How can I give my beginning (idea) a twist?...it is so cliche and not original....?

I would just suggest writing as much as you can now and worry about trying to change details later. You will come up with different and unique ideas as you go along. You did say he had to be on the good side...but if he was raised on the bad side, it would be a major twist, something no reader would ever think about.
